Bishounen (美少年) literally meaning “beautiful youth”, describes a young man whose beauty transcends the boundary of gender or sexual orientation. This demographic is mainly targeted at girls and women and contains strong senses of homosexuality or includes very unique social relationships. Bishounen are usually mixed with genres such as love/romance and comedy.
A good example for Bishounen is the series “Ouran High school Host Club”. Published in 2002, follows Haruhi Fujioka who is a scholarship student from a average background who attends at the prestigious school called Ouran Academy located in Bunkyo, Tokyo full of students with wealthy backgrounds. Looking for a place to study, Haruhi stumbles across the Ouran Academy Host Club, a group consisting of six male students that gather to entertain their female “clients”, in the Third Music Room of the academy.
Whilst there, Haruhi accidently knocks over a valuable valued at ¥8,000,000 and is informed that she would have to repay this cost by working for the club as an errand boy, but is later promoted to full-host status. Haruhi’s appearance of short hair and a gender-ambiguous face makes the hosts mistakes her as a male student. However, this is later on cleared up as the hosts discover this fact one by one but keep this a secret, as she is a “natural” for entertaining their female “clients”. Here, she faces different activities day by day which causes her to be put in very comedic situations[LINK] For a wide range of goods straight from Japan including Anime, Manga and Figures, please follow the link below: [LINK]
