Seinen (青年) literally meaning “young man” or “young men”, targets the older side of the audience around the ages of 15 to 24. This demographic can contain more graphical and violent content within the series compared to others, such as Shounen.
However, this isn’t always the case as seinen manga/anime can focus on a wide variety of genres from your typical adventure, sports and comedy to psychological and love/romance. Seinen may also contain some mild sexual content although it is not as extreme as others.
A good example of seinen would be the series “Ghost in the Shell”. Published in 1989, this fictional story revolves around Major Motoko who works for the organization “Public Security Section 9” set in the mid-21st century of Japan where, in this future, computer technology has advanced to the point that citizens can modify their bodies for cyberization. These range from cyberbrains, which is a technology that allows them to interface their biological brain with various networks to a fully function prosthetic body that enables people to become cyborgs.
Our main hero, Motoko Kusanagi, is now a cyborg due to a terrible accident in her early years, which requires her to use full body prosthesis to house her cyber brain. However, this type of high-end cyberization makes prosthesis users prone to highly skilled hackers who can hack a person to bend their whims.
The story is set in the fiction city of Nilhama, Nilhama Prefecture (aka New Port City). The series follows the members of the Public Security Section 9 who deal with a variety of cases that included corruption, cyber-criminals and terrorism. Each of these scenarios are unique and will require the skills of Section 9’s to resolve in order to stop the issue from escalating.[LINK] For a wide range of goods straight from Japan including Anime, Manga and Figures, please follow the link below: [LINK]
