Kuudere describes a character that is cool, calm and collective. They are serious and, due to this, they are the ones that people turns to when times get rough as they do not panic under pressure. Kuuderes usually speak in a monotone voice rarely showing any type of sadness or excitement at all, in some cases, some series may even portray Kuuderes as completely emotionless.
However, through this cool shell on the outside is actually an emotional, caring and nice person on the inside but they do not show it due to fact that they do not want to show any weakness. If they do show this emotion, it usually tends to play a big part of the series giving the scene a bigger impact to the audience.
Kuudere is derived from the English pronunciation of ‘cool’ and the term ‘dere dere’ (affectionate/lovey dovey).
An example of this type of character is Byakuya Kuchiki from the series “Bleach”. Coming from a noble family, he is the 28th Head of the Kuchiki Clan who acts as his role would intend. He is always calm in any situation (even in battles) and speaks in a monotone voice, rarely showing any type of emotion. He is very firm with law and order and believes that they should be followed.
However, it is shown in the series that he cares for his younger sister Rukia Kuchiki who he tries to protect at any cost and, sometimes, even bending the rules just for her.For access to whole library of anime and manga visit Crunchyroll and sign up for their premium membership today!
