Yandere

Yandere describes a character that is gentle/ innocent and loving towards someone but this devotion soon becomes a more possessive relationship which makes the character mentally unstable and violent towards others who are close to the one whom they show affection to if they are just physically near them or comes into contact with them in any way.

However, this type of character can also be used comically, usually exaggerated, in order to show extreme affection towards another character.

Yandere is derived from the term ‘yanderu’ (sick/ mental) and ‘dere dere’ (affectionate/lovey dovey).

Example

A typical example of this type is Yuno Gasai from the series “Mirai Nikki”. She is your typical ideal high school student who has good grades and is popular with others. She is sweet, kind and sometimes even shy when around her love interest Yukiteru (aka Yuki), the male protagonist in the series.

However, later on in the series, we get to see the cold, dark and ruthless side of her as she does everything and anything for her and Yukiteru’s survival in a “game” that they are forced to participate into.
