Mecha

The word Mecha, short for mechanical in Japan, in a series usually include fights that usually include robots or other mechanical equipment used for battle. This genre is usually set either in space, an alternate future or both.

Example

An example of this is the popular series “Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann”. Literally meaning “Peirce the Heavens”, this series is set in an alternate universe where Earth is ruled by the Spiral King, who forces mankind to live underground in isolated villages under the constant threat of earthquakes. This story revolves around Simon, a meek young boy who is ostracized by his peers, and the eccentric delinquent Kamina who Simon sees as an older borther. Kamina invites Simon to his gang, Team Gurren, whose target is to one day visit the surface world.

One day, Simon unearths a key shaped like a drill, later known as a Core Drill, followed by a small mecha that resembles a face of Gunmen, mechas that are piloted by beastmen that enforces the order of keeping humans underground by the Spiral King. Shortly after, a giant Gunmen crashes through the ceiling and begins to attack the village uncontrollably, followed by a girl named Yoko who tries to stop the Gunmen. Simon uses his Core Drill to pilot the small Gunmen, later named Lagann by Kamina, to destroy the larger Gunmen and breaks through to the surface world.
