As the name would suggest, this genre is about the sword wielding samurais. This genre is usually paired with Historical events in the past, typically in the time of the Edo period (1603 – 1868), action and drama. This genre often has a lot of action included, though; this genre can go either way of being comical or serious.

An example of Samurai would be the series “Samurai Champloo”. Published in 2004, this series follows a young woman named Fuu who works as a waitress in a teashop when she is abused by a band of samurai. She is saved by a young ronin named Jin and a mysterious rogue named Mugen who, after the fracas, begins to attack Jin as he proves himself to be a worthy opponent. While fighting one another, they inadvertently cause the death of Shibui Tomonoshina, who is the magistrate’s son, which result in the two sentenced to be executed for this crime.

Mugen, Jin and Fuu

However, just before the execution, Fuu manages to save the two and later asks them to accompany her to find “the samurai who smells like sunflowers”. And thus their journey begins filled with many encounters and comedic situations.
