An example of this genre would be the series “Code Geass”. Published in 2006, this series is set in an alternative timeline where the world is split into three superpowers, Britannia, the Chinese Federation and the European Union. The story starts shortly after the Britannia Empire conquers Japan on August 10, 2010 a.t.b. (1955 A.D.), with the help of their newest weapon named Autonomous Armored Knight, aka Knightmare Frame. During the war, Japan is renamed to Area 11, with the citizens, known as the elevens, are stripped of their rights and freedom.

The story revolves around Lelouch Lamperouge, an exiled Britannian price who was used as a bargaining chip to Japan along with his sister, Nunnally Lamperouge, sent by their father and emperor of Britannia, Charles zi Britannia, when their mother was killed. 7 years later, Lelouch finds a girl called C.C. (aka C2) who saves him a Britannian Royal Guard, which results in a contract being made between them granting Lelouch the power of the Geass. This power allows the user to control a person just by looking into ones eye. With this power, Lelouch decides to investigate the identity of the one who killed his mother.
