As the name would suggest, this genre is about sports. Usually mixed with Action and School, this genre includes a main character that is either really talented or just plain but gets better over time.
The main character usually aims to improve themself at the given sport to overcoming the odds against their opponents in matches using new techniques that he/she has learnt over a period of time, filled with vigorous training. Nearly everything in this genre is resolved by the sport, for example, if there were any quarrels, it would all be dealt with on the field or using the field to prove a point. Although these series do not give you much of a background story of the characters, these do slowly reveal the goals the main character wishes to achieve or the motive behind joining the club.
A good example of this genre would be the series “Kuroko no Basuke”. Published in 2008, this story is set after the five regulars from the Teikō Middle School basketball team went their separate ways after graduation, each going to different high schools with a high tier basketball team. These players are known as the “Generation of Miracles” after the performance of dominating all basketball competition throughout middle school. While the limelight was on the five regulars, very few knew of the sixth player in the “Generation of Miracles” known as the phantom sixth man called Kuroko Tetsuya.
Kuroko attends Serin High and joins the schools, less known but powerful, basketball team along with another freshman called Kagami Taiga, a naturally talented basketball player who spent most of his middle school in the US. Now, Kuroko and Kagami aim to beat Kuroko’s former team members one by one to become the best in Japan.[LINK] For a wide range of goods straight from Japan including Anime, Manga and Figures, please follow the link below: [LINK]
