Adventure

Adventure genres are amongst one of the popular genres around. As the name suggests, the plot usually involves the character(s) going on a journey to achieve their purpose while moving around exploring new places in the process. This genre is usually mixed with Action to keep the audience interested and usually, the character will overcome tough battles and become stronger in the process.

The stories usually contain a main character that has a solid back story that may be referenced back during their travels or meeting a similar scenario to the past. This genre usually calls for good character development as, as mentioned before, the audience will find out more about the character’s past, their struggles and personalities that the audience may relate to them.

Example

A good example of an adventure series is the title “Full Metal Alchemist”. Published in 2001, this series centers the Elric brothers, Edward and Alphonse (Al), who are looking for the legendary catalyst the Philosopher’s Stone in order to recover their lost bodies.

In this world of alchemy, every transmutation follows the principle of equivalent exchange, “To create, something of equal value must be lost”. Their lost bodies were the result of human transmutation, a taboo in which an alchemist attempts to create or modify a human being, trying to resurrect their mother who passed away due to an illness. In their attempt, Edward’s left leg and Alphonse’s entire body were sacrificed in the process and the human transmutation ended in a failure. Not wanting to lose his younger brother too, Edward manages to save his brother’s soul by sacrificing his right arm and affixed him into a suit of armor through a seal.

Days later, Edward gets invited and agrees to become a State Alchemist who are entitled to resources that only the state has access to. He joins so he can use this research material to find the whereabouts of the Philosopher’s Stone, a stone that possesses a large amount of power, to recover their bodies. Shortly after accepting, Edward visits his childhood friend Winry Rockbell, who builds Edward a replacement left leg and right arm with automail, an advanced type of prosthetic limbs.

Now, Edward and Alphonse set out on the journey to find the Philosopher’s Stone while encountering some twists and turns along the way.
